With the province moving to an alpha-numeric combination for passenger plates in 1970, the all-numeric block of 1 to 999,999 that had previously be reserved for passneger vehicles became available for other vehicle types including, for the first time, Commercial Trucks. The following table shows how these numbers were allotted in 1972:

Following the same format that was used in 1972, the 1973 Commercial Truck plates employed an all numeric format that commenced at 500-001 and proceeded to 764-000 as part of the initial run. Due to the re-use of these plates in 1974 & 1975 as well as the absence of any issuing information for these latter years, it is not known when plates above 764-000 were issued to drivers. The following table shows how this block of numbers was assigned between 1973-1975 (NOTE: there is some guesswork involved with these numbers):

There is nothing particularly interesting about this plate until you turn it over and see that it was mistakenly put through the paint machine the wrong way, causing the back of the plate to be painted black.

Distribution Info - 1974 Plates
Not available at BC Archives
Please contact us at cgarrish@yahoo.com if you have this information

When renewing the 1973 Commercial Truck plates in 1974, motorists were issued a dedicated "Commercial" decal that was unique to this base. As can be seen in the distribution information below, approximately 500,000 decals were made, despite vehicle registration likely not surpassing 300,000 in 1973.
It is believed that the distribution information presented below is the initial mailout to the various Branch offices across the province as it represents only about two-thirds of the anticpated demand and that additional decals would have been sent closer to the February 28th deadline.

While there are no official records available to indicate what numbers were issued for Commercial Trucks in 1975, it is thought that these were generally in the 900,000 block. There are some interesting clues found on the plates that help confirm this.
First, the dash between the thrid and fourth character has disappeared, which suggests these plates were made at a later date than the plates in the 800,000 block thought to have been issued in 1974. Of note, the use of a dash had also disappeared on regular passenger license plates issued in 1975.
As of this writing, there are no known plates in the 900,000 block that have a 1974 decal, only 1975 decals (excepting those cases where collectors have monkeyed with NOS plates in this range by applying 1974 decals decades after the fact in order to increase their value on the re-sale market).

Another tell-tale sign that the plates in the 900,000 block were manufactured later and for use in 1975 can be seen in some of the die variations. First is the random appearance of the die type used on the passenger plates for this year to stamp "BRITISH COLUMBIA" along the bottom of the plates:

DIE TYPE USED ON A MAJORITY OF THE 1973 COMMERCIAL TRUCK PLATE BASE

DIE TYPE USED ON 1973 PASSENGER PLATES APPEARING ON SOME PLATES LATE IN THE 1973 COMMERCIAL TRUCK BASE

DIE TYPE USED ON 1973 PASSENGER PLATES

As can be seen in the examples above and below, the passneger dies (shown above-bottom) appeared in the 970,000 block and again in the over-run series between 30-000 and 39-999 (see further below).
A further variation can also be found in the dies used to stamp the "19" in the top left corner on a small number of plates produced late in the series (i.e. 980,000 & 990,000 blocks). Likely the result of inattentiveness on the part of workers in the Oakalla plate shop, it is thought the variant (below right) is the die type used on passenger plates in 1968 & 1969:

THE COMMON "19" DIE TYPE

THE VARIANT "19" DIE TYPE
With the exhaustion of combinations after the issuance of 999,999, the Motor Vehicle Branch issued a final block of Commercial Truck plates in the 30,000 block. On these plates the dash has been re-established while passenger dies have been used for stamping "BRITISH COLUMBIA" along the bottom of the plates:

When renewing the 1973 Commercial Truck plates in 1975, the decals that motorists were issued were the same as those that were issued to drivers of regular passenger vehicles. It is assumed that this was done as a cost-savings in terms of administrative costs as well as production costs. As a result, it is not possible to discern from the MVB's records how many decals were issued to Commercial Trucks in 1975.
