This web site attempts to visually capture and present the history of Yukon license plates, and is based upon extensive archival research as well as information from many Yukon plate enthusiasts. At present, there are approximately 200 different licence plates showcased, which is a number that we hope will continue to increase on a regular basis - so check back often!
In 1914, the Territory Secretary assented to The Motor Vehicle Ordinance No. 14, thereby allowing the the Yukon to "issue and deliver ... two number plates having thereon the registration number of such motor vehicle, the abbreviated name of the Territory and the year of issue."
The Yukon was one of the last jurisdictions in Canada to require motorists operating within its borders to register their vehicles and display licence plates, but has now been issuing licence plates for over a century.
