Formally referred to as "Rented" plates under the Motor Vehicles Regulations, since 1990 these plate’s can be identified by the letter
“R” followed by two other letters followed by one
digit or by two digits, however, between 1970 and 1977 they used the "UD" prefix, which was followed by "1U" between 1978 and 1981, before the "R" prefix was introduced in 1982.
These plates are issued for rented vehicles rented or leased by a
person, firm, or corporation and used as private
or as commercial vehicles.
1970
When the Territory changed the slogan on its licence plates from "Land of the Midnight Sun" in 1970 to "Home of the Klondike" in 1971, a minor change was also enacted to the design of the gold panner symbol. A closer look at the design of the plates from these year's shows that the handle on the pick-axe was extended in 1971. As a result, Oakalla advised that the "new dies do not permit side by side with [the "UD"] letters." The simple solution was to "superpose" (to place above something else) the letters.

As can be seen in the images above, the design of the "Gold Panner" symbol was slightly modified as a result of the introduction of new dies in 1971 with the most noticeable difference being the length of the handle of the pick-axe, thereby necessitating a change the placement of the "UD" prefix. |
