Index to Registration Nos. 1 - 14,907
1919
(BC Archives File No. GR-0665 / Volume 7)
A
special thanks to the Royal BC Musuem & BC Archives for allowing the use of these photos,
which are of the Register which comprise part of the records of the Motor Vehicle Branch (File No. GR-0665, Volume No. 7).
The Archives have this Index as being for the year 1919, and for most part, many of the names and numbers check out when cross-referenced against entries found in Volumes 8 through 26 - with some notable exceptions.
While the names appear to have been entered in sequential order by registration number (as opposed to alphabetical order), this is not always the case as there are a number of instances where numbers are listed out of sequence.
Moreover, we know that registration numbers in 1919 went as high as approximately 22,000, yet this Index only records numbers as high as 14,907 and does not appear to have recorded any transfers.
Even more confounding, where are all the low numbers? We know that the No. 1 was issued to John Barnsely as it is recorded in Volume 8 (plus, his descendants still have the plate), but he is not listed under the "B"s. Meanwhile, the only other single digits found are 5 (p. 1), 6 (p. 139) and 8 (p. 53). Go figure!
