British Columbia Registration Decals

As fun as finding out the annual decal colours (which, for those of us born after 1969, we imagine to be as fun as finding out what the new license plate colours would be back in the day) is exploring the other side of the decal to see what the application instructions may be!.

Despite what may seem like a simple task of applying a registration decal to a license plate, it would seem that the task has become much more difficult since ICBC reduced the size of the decals by a third for the 2005 registration year. Although this writer's experience has been that the good folks down at BCAA will gladly attach the decals for you, apparently when left to our own devices some of us are a little lackadaisical (by ICBC standards) in attaching our decals in the appropriate location.

While the majority of the plates pictured below are pre-2005, they do provide a good illustration of the some of the "odd" places where people have decided to attach the date decals. This phenomenon is particularly acute on the Veteran plates of our former service men and women as no clear location (outside of the decal box) was provided for the date decal.

In response, ICBC has begun to print easy-to-follow directions on both sides of paper envelopes that now accompany the month/year registration decals issued to motorists:

In 2008, ICBC reduced the packaging of licence plate validation decals; that means that 160,000 fewer sheets of plastic will enter landfills each year.
